This plant species known as Pini Beraliya, [the scientific name, Shorea ovalifolia], was introduced to the world for the first time in 1864 by British Botanist Henry Thwaites.

This plant species was recorded in the 2012 National Red Data List as, ‘Extinct in the Wild’ (EW), as it was not recorded in the natural environment for more than 100 years and was confined only to the botanical garden.

Pini Beraliya plant grows to a height of 35 metres and flowers only once a year. Beautiful flowers with five white petals of several centimetres are produced and the beauty of the flower increases due to the bright yellow stamens.

“Regarding the scientific classification of the plant species Pini Beraliya (Shorea ovalifolia), it belongs to the genus Shorea belonging to the Dipterocarpaceae family of the Malvales tribe belonging to the Tracheophytes class of the plant kingdom. According to the research done by Botanist Peter Ashton, the plant was named Shorea ovalifolia. About 17 species of plants belonging to the genus Shorea have been reported from Sri Lanka and all of them are endemic to Sri Lanka,”
